xmas

had a great time with the folks, we had a really mellow time chatting and we watched a couple good movies…

i’ve become increasingly uncomfortable with receiving gifts over the years. we’ve agreed not to exchange gifts starting next year, though maybe that will evolve into giving just one or two. mom still really likes the aesthetic of christmas and the memories, and would like to keep gifts as part of that.

what do you think about gift giving? what does it mean to you?

  1. Hi Dave -

good luck with really getting your folks into the gift of not giving, as in: ‘not exchanging presents but just being there for and with one another’

I have tried for years with my sis and my mom … and sorta half-way succeeded last year when my sister half-heartedly agreed to not give me anything for my bday. I was fine with that … but heard through the grapevine that my sister hated NOT giving me anything.

So, when her bday came around about 2.5 months later I was in big trouble. She didn’t want anything - but just because she had not given ME anything. In all truth, she did want a present. So I sent a huge bunch of flowers and called her to underscore that flowers didn’t count as presents. She was happy she got at least something … and called the whole ‘we-don’t-give-each-other-presents-for-bdays-and-Xmas-anymore’ off straight away.

I have to admit I did get really nice presents from her for Xmas… Hope she liked hers too …

Try to enjoy a couple of days off from work till 2004!

    Hugs,
    bxa

  2. i love giving and recieving presents! we do a lot of silly gift giving. much fun.

my favorite present was from moomin this year. Badger explained to him about giving presents and set him loose in longs to pick something out for me.

he came up with a pink sparkley frog with sparkley body goo in it. hahahaha. the frog has a crown on which unscrews and you scoop the goo out of her head…

  3. I once had a six year old give me a box of little buttons and ribbons and stuff. I think it’s one of the best gifts ever!

I love to pick up stuff I see for people all year long. Birthdays and $WINTERHOLIDAY just make it a little easier for some people to accept the gifts. Plus, I like the anticipation and the excitement that come with a bunch of people knowing they’re going to be surprised!
