minor thing or beginning of a new era
it’s a minor thing, we’ve been doing it for years, but there’s something remarkable to me about the SpaceX commercial space launch this weekend. Major milestone? what do you think?
this video of the rocket’s launch is really awesome though!! I got goose bumps watching the second stage separation. Does NASA publish launches like this? They should post them on youtube for every launch, this is so inspiring. Really shows you what kind of amazing things we as humans can do. Now we just need to feed everyone.
it was wild to watch the engines and their exhaust change as the altitude changes. can you imagine being an astronaut and watching all of this first hand? that has GOT to change your perspective on things. tibetan teacher trungpa rinpoche used to answer “more over it” when asked for advice near the end of his life. i’m guessing astronauts know something about what he meant.

Was “more over it” different from ‘get over it’, or just less rude?
Maybe at one time they meant exactly the same thing.

no one knows for sure - that i’ve talked to. he was inscrutable like that. could have been “get over it”. could have meant get a wider perspective, as in more on top of it. maybe both at the same time?

Yeah, like spaciously orbiting a circumstance. There’s an article in today’s “Boston Globe” by Jonah Lehrer, discussing modes of thinking. Instinctual is relying on the gut level. According to the article, the crucial skill is the ability to think about your own thinking, or metacognition, as it is known. Here you will know when you gut should be ignored. Philip Tetlock, a psychologist at U of Ca. says it’s the willingness to engage in introspection, to cultivate “the art of overhearing.”

Correction to the quote in my comment. Philip Tetlock said it’s the willingness to engage in introspection to culitvate “the art of self-overhearing”.

interesting. in reading about “sheshin” this week, i discovered that Tibetan term for awareness is also translated as self knowing or self-awareness. I like the idea of self-overhearing.
