Beyond Belief

Each year there is a theme, this year it was about exploring and going beyond our beliefs. I think that is one of the roles of both religion and art, to help us reconnect with the open possibility of life that our concretizing and grasping analytical mind tends to squelch.

Anyone who comes can bring their art and display or perform it. Some large pieces however are planned and situated in the center of the city. A few also funded by the Burning Man ticket sales. Many are interactive, which jives with the burning man ethic of "no spectators, only participants."

The Temple of Gravity (shown here) was well received. The artist suspended five large granite slabs from steel pipes using heavy chain.

Many art projects had a spiritual component because of the theme this year, like the large prayer flags I found. Others just shook your grasp of the world, like the titan chandelier which fell from the sky.
